What is an RCCB?

RCCB is an electrical wiring device which acts as a protective device and protects one from electrical damages. Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) is a protective device which senses the power flowing and offers protection against mishaps like earth leakage.

It follows the principle of ‘Kirchhoff’s Current Law’ which states that ‘The amount of current entering the circuit must be equal to the amount of current leaving the circuit,’ i.e. the sum of the total (incoming + outgoing) current should be 0.

What is an ELCB?

ELCB stands for Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker. They have a similar function as RCCB but are voltage sensor devices. This is an old technology & is not in everyday use now. Yet, there are individual differences between RCCB and ELCB.

The Difference Between an RCCB and an ELCB

1. RCCB is a new name and refers to current operating devices. ELCB, on the other hand, refers to a voltage-operated earth leakage device.
2. RCCB ensures 100% detection of leakage current & is also available to sense the AC as well as DC leakage current.  

ELCB is not preferable as it can only detect current that flow back through the primary earth wire. Hence, RCCB will be more helpful when you face an electric hazard such as an electric shock or a short circuit.

3. RCCB has no connection with the earth wire. It trips when both currents (phase and neutral) are different.

ELCB works only based on the Earth leakage current. It will trip if the voltage is more than zero on earth wire.
