AWS, the computing division of Amazon (AMZN.O), announced on Thursday that it would invest 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in Italy over the next five years to further expand its data center operations in the nation.
AWS opened its first cloud region in Italy in 2020 with the goal of investing two billion euros by 2029 as part of the ambition to expand its cloud offering in Europe.
According to a statement from the firm, the investment will sustain up to 5,500 employment throughout the AWS data center supply chain through 2029.
According to the report, employment opportunities will include positions in engineering, telecommunications, construction, facility maintenance, and the local economy as a whole.
In May, Reuters first revealed that Amazon Web Services (AWS) was negotiating a billion-euro investment with Rome to grow its operations there.
According to its website, the company’s clients in the nation include the luxury automaker Ferrari (RACE.MI) and the insurance provider Assicurazioni Generali (GASI.MI).
On Thursday, the Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore announced that AWS would expand its data center operations in Milan.
It announced in May that it will invest 15.7 billion euros in data centers in the northeastern Aragon region of Spain and that it would invest 7.8 billion euros in Germany by 2040.
