Brandon Rembert is a Division 1 baseball player at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. Alcorn state competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with teams such as Alabama State, Jackson State, and Southern University to name a few. Rembert has been recognized as one of the top players in that entire conference. His road to becoming the player he is today hasn’t been easy to say the least.
Rembert is a native of Pensacola, Florida and he attended Booker T. Washington High School. That high school was attended by stars such as Roy Jones Jr. and Derrick Brooks to name a few. Rembert hopes to become the next star to hail from that school. “I don’t consider myself a star by any means yet. One day I hope to become half as successful as they are,” he says. Rembert may not be a star yet, but he is certainly on his way there. Rembert has garnered multiple honors in his collegiate career at Alcorn State. The Pre-Season All-Conference 1st Team selection is starting to become a well-known name not only in his conference, but in the entire HBCU. He was named an All-HBCU preseason selection by Black College Nines, being listed to the second team respectfully.
“There was a lot of elite talent on that list and I just felt grateful to be on the list with so much talent,” Rembert says on being named a Pre-Season All-HBCU selection. The Alcorn State outfielder has also garnered the attention of scouts. He was listed by Black College Nines as an HBCU player to watch for the MLB Draft, although he wasn’t chosen in the 2020 draft. “The draft was only 5 rounds this year, so I wasn’t really expecting to be picked up this year. I was just thankful to be mentioned on the list of potential draft picks.” Rembert remains hopeful that he will get picked up in the 2021 draft. “I will be heading back to school to try and increase my draft stock since the NCAA gave us our year back. I will be getting my masters in the fall,” he says.
Rembert’s road to where he is today hasn’t been the smoothest. Alcorn is the 3rd school he has attended so far in his collegiate career. He started off at Faulkner University his freshman year and then transferred to Coastal Alabama, a community college in Brewton, Alabama, for his sophomore year. “I felt like leaving Faulkner was the best move for me at the time. Being there didn’t really fit what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be in my career,” he states. Rembert was actually on the team’s junior varsity team his freshman year. He played his entire sophomore year at CACC and then transferred to Alcorn State University.
During his spring season at Alcorn State, Rembert wielded a batting average of .345 and an outstanding on base percentage of .462. Rembert also had a mindboggling average of .417 in conference play that year, which landed him 6th in the conference. “Everything just clicked for me that year. I was seeing the ball well and was just feeling really good. I actually had a slow start to the season, but started to get it going and then road that wave.” That year put Rembert on the map and made him one of the most feared hitters in the entire SWAC. “I feel like I always had the talent, but that year I kind of put all the pieces together and had a pretty good season overall,” he states.
Rembert’s senior season was cancelled after 12 games because of the coronavirus pandemic. As mentioned earlier, the NCAA granted him his season back and he will become a fifth year senior. “I was very thankful to get that year back. I honestly did not want my last year of college to be like that. I was kind of nervous about the whole situation, but thankfully we were able to get another year.” Rembert has one last year to prove that he belongs at the next level and he’s going to make the most of every opportunity he gets to turn the heads of scouts this upcoming spring.
