OpenAI said that its GPUs were melting due to the popularity of its image generating model. It is currently available in programs like Microsoft Copilot and Adobe Firefly.
OpenAI stated on Wednesday that the image-generating capability of ChatGPT, which caused its servers to crash last month, is now being used by other apps and generative AI companies.
Among them is Adobe, which announced on Thursday that it will be collaborating with Google and OpenAI to expand its Firefly tool’s AI models.
The ability to create photos directly in ChatGPT led to a significant increase in usage and the emergence of trends such as people dressing up like action figures. According to OpenAI, in the first week following the feature’s launch, over 130 million users globally produced over 700 million photos.
The picture model, known as gpt-image-1, is now being made available through OpenAI’s API, allowing developers to include the ability to generate images into their tools and solutions.
According to OpenAI’s blog article, design tools that use the model include Figma, HeyGen, and Wix in addition to Adobe.
The API’s inclusion of the picture model gives developers greater freedom. According to OpenAI, developers have control over the quantity of photos produced, the sensitivity of moderation, the transparency or opaqueness of the background, and the image quality or creation speed. Additionally, they will have the option to select the output file format.
Microsoft, on the other hand, declared that a new “Create” experience will enable OpenAI’s GPT-4o picture generating function in its Microsoft 365 Copilot app. Among other things, the program can convert PowerPoint presentations into films and create graphics from prompts.
Last week, OpenAI released a number of new models on the text side. This includes OpenAI o3, reasoning models that promise better performance in coding, math, and visual understanding, and GPT-4.1, new models that developers may use that can process more data and work faster.
The newest development in the competition with Google for the top spot in the gen AI market is OpenAI’s recent wave of announcements. Improvements to Google’s Gemini’s image-generation capabilities, known as Imagen 3, were shown earlier this month at Google Cloud Next 2025.
