The luxury company that is sweeping the US has a brand-new covert weapon. Genesis is creating a new electric vehicle platform to compete with rival luxury brands like Tesla and BMW. The new Genesis EV platform, in contrast to the GV60, is anticipated to be exclusive to the brand and unrelated to Hyundai vehicles.
Hyundai’s premium brand, Genesis, is rapidly growing in the US thanks to three exquisitely designed, long-range electric cars.
The GV60, GV70, and G80 electrified models are available from the luxury brand. Genesis sold over 27% more electric vehicles in the US through the first half of this year than it did the previous. Growth is occurring at a time when premium competitors like Tesla, Mercedes, and Porsche lost position in Q2.
Even as it enters more states, Genesis continues to be a dark horse in the luxury EV business. Genesis is looking to narrow the gap with Tesla in spite of its growth.
In 2025, the company will improve the GV60, its first electric vehicle, adding new design cues and a larger battery. With a little longer range and quicker charging than the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, the 2025 Genesis GV60 is built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform.
This week, we got our first look at the revised GV60 testing in the US, ahead of its formal release later this year. Check out the video below to see the updated headlights and revamped front bumper. Genesis, meantime, has even more ambitious intentions.
Genesis will introduce a brand-new, high-end premium electric vehicle platform
The 2025 GV60 will be the final Genesis model to utilize Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, notwithstanding the upgrades.
John Son, the president of Genesis’ worldwide product office, and Mike Song, the company’s new global head, claim that the premium brand is creating its own electric vehicle platform, which will probably be available only through Hyundai.
All upcoming Genesis models will be built on the new platform, starting with the upgraded GV60. Hyundai formally declared that later this year will see the release of its first three-row electrified SUV. The three-row electric vehicle SUV, the Hyundai IONIQ 9, will be built on the E-GMP platform.
Last year, Kia, Hyundai’s sibling business, unveiled its three-row EV9, which is also built on the E-GMP. Nearly 10,000 Kia EV9 cars were sold in the US through the first half of 2024, demonstrating the vehicle’s growing popularity.
Smaller, more reasonably priced EVs are being introduced by Kia. In Korea, the EV3, its first model, is priced at a mere $30,700 (KRW 42.08 million). Also constructed on the E-GMP platform is the Kia EV3.
Though they didn’t provide any more information, Genesis promised more soon. In the meantime, Genesis will introduce its first high-performance EV, the GV60 Magma, early in 2019.
Genesis intends to introduce the top trim for every model, including the electric G80, as the Magma model.
