Google has agreed to buy energy from Engie North America’s 350 MW Chillingham solar project in Bell County, Texas, through a power purchase agreement (PPA).
For an unspecified duration, Google will offset 90MW from the solar plant.
Later this year, the project is anticipated to begin commercial operations. Engie is responsible for the development, construction, and operation of the Chillingham solar plant.
The LEAP program, which Google and LevelTen Energy co-developed to expedite the sourcing of PPAs, facilitated the transaction.
Amanda Peterson Corio, global head of data center energy at Google, stated, “This agreement is another example of how using our scalable procurement approach is transforming the way the industry sells and purchases power, and ultimately speeds up the development of carbon free electricity.”
After signing contracts with Elawan Energy, X-Elio, and SB Energy for a total of 1.1GW of contracted power, this PPA is Google’s fourth in the Texan market this year.
One of the biggest PPAs to date was the most recent one with SB Energy, which contracted power from the Orion Solar Belt. The total capacity of the Orion Solar Belt is 900MW, of which Google has a 75 percent contract through the PPA.
