Google unveiled Android XR in partnership with Qualcomm and Samsung. With a significant emphasis on AI interaction, this new operating system combines XR, VR, and AR. Android XR is currently in the developer preview stage. Next year, users will be able to purchase Samsung’s Project Moohan, the first suitable devices.
By establishing a thriving network of developers and device makers for Android XR, Google hopes to emulate the model of the successful Android ecosystem. Tools like ARCore, Android Studio, and Unity are part of the platform. This will make it possible for developers to begin creating games and apps for the next generation of Android XR smartphones.
Support for Qualcomm partners Lynx, Sony, and XREAL is highlighted in the announcement. This demonstrates a cooperative approach to creating a variety of Android XR devices to meet the needs of a wide range of consumers. Despite being a codename, Project Moohan may not be what it is in the end. With its multi-modal input and sophisticated displays, the device puts ergonomic comfort first.
Samsung’s product is identical to Apple’s Vision Pro in terms of both design and functionality. But for conversational engagement, it integrates Gemini AI. This makes it possible to transition between the real and virtual worlds more smoothly and immersively with apps like YouTube and Maps. Additional capabilities include the ability to browse across many virtual screens and use gestures to quickly get information.
More XR-specific content will be released in the upcoming year, and Google Play’s mobile and tablet apps will work seamlessly together. According to Google, Gemini will make things easier, which might be very useful or a little invasive in public areas.
In addition to headsets, Android XR is expected to function with all-day glasses. Google wants a range of glasses that work in unison with Android smartphones so that users can easily access notifications, translations, and navigation without a phone.
Quote from Won-Joon Choi, EVP at Samsung: “XR has quickly shifted from a distant promise to a tangible reality. We believe it has the potential to unlock new and meaningful ways to interact with the world by truly resonating with your everyday lives, transcending physical boundaries.”
“We are at an inflection point for XR, where advancements in multimodal AI enable natural and intuitive ways to use technology in your everyday life,” said Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem.
