With its enhanced and updated artificial intelligence features, Google is offering broadened options for crafting personalized journeys, destination plans, and experiences.
Recent enhancements to Google Search, Google Maps, Google Lens, and Gemini may simplify travel planning using AI features. Google users can now access recommended trip itineraries in their AI Overviews results with a simple click while using the search engine. In order to accomplish this, they have to go to the Google Search box and, according to Google, “search for something like ‘create an itinerary for Costa Rica with a focus on nature.’”
The sample itineraries generated may feature photos, reviews, mapped locations, and options for whatever users envision, be it fine dining, sightseeing, nature exploration, or something else.
Perfect for friends extracting their trips from the group chat, users can export their AI Overviews itineraries to Google Docs or email, facilitating easier access, commenting, and plan adjustments. No matter if you’re traveling solo or with a group, sharing your travel plans with others can serve as a precautionary measure.
Another new feature allows travelers to use Google Lens to point their device’s camera at a unique landmark (or something interesting) and request information about it. When requested, an AI Overviews result can offer insights and online references about what you recorded, enabling further learning.
What additional information should travelers have regarding the AI travel planning features offered by Google?
For easier access and viewing while traveling, Google users can upload their AI Overviews itineraries directly to a “custom list” on their Google Maps. Gemini uses the new “screenshot” list function to identify locations from the screenshots you’ve gathered and displays them all in a visible format on Google Maps. Then, users can share that list of screenshots with their travel companions or loved ones who are back home.
Travelers can also take advantage of Gemini’s Gems feature to plan their entire journey from beginning to end. The free tool enables you to design “your very own trip planner” that follows instructions. Your travel Gem can assist with tasks such as “helping you choose a destination, locating eateries in an unfamiliar city, or even recommending what to bring,” all depending on your instructions.
Currently, trip planning via AI Overviews in Search is exclusively available in the U.S. for searches conducted in English. The AI Overviews feature in Lens currently only supports English queries, but it will soon expand to other languages.
The AI travel planning “screenshot” feature from Gemini in Google Maps is beginning its rollout in the U.S., but it is available only in English at this stage. In addition, it is currently only available to iOS users, and those who wish to use it must grant Google Maps access to their photos.
