Google has stated emphatically that it hopes to integrate its Gemini AI assistant into your daily life to the greatest extent feasible. Newly found unfinished code by Android Authority demonstrates how future Gemini extensions will accomplish that purpose. At least six more extensions are planned, and the ones that are now available combine Gemini with a number of Google services.
The goal of Gemini’s extensions is to make using the platform easier and more efficient. This makes them comparable to Chrome and other web browser extensions. Sixteen first-party services, including Google Flights, Hotels, Maps, Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music, are already connected through extensions offered by Gemini. Gemini can now obtain real-time personal data and incorporate it into user requests thanks to these integrations. This could be determining the distance between a store and your friend’s house or obtaining information from Google Flights about an impending vacation.
The expected additional additions will expand the range of services offered by Gemini. Google Home is one of the most notable unannounced extensions. By granting the AI direct control over smart home devices without requiring a request from Google Assistant, Gemini effectively replaces Google Assistant. That’s a small but significant reduction in the amount of time that passes between a request to turn on the lights and the switch granting it. According to the coding, it’s unclear how far the extension will go, but it’s definitely a step in the direction of Gemini replacing Google Assistant as the default voice assistant.
The Phone app extension that is shown in the code is no different. The intermediary function of Google Assistant is eliminated once more. Direct control of phone call commands would be possible for Gemini. The new Utilities extension will also work with smartphones, enabling Gemini to modify mobile apps and phone settings. To get Gemini to take pictures, change the volume, and launch apps, for example, you might use considerably more informal language than the precise and somewhat restricted Google Assistant instructions.
Release of Extended Extension
The three other extensions that were identified during the code crawl were revealed at Google I/O this year and are somewhat more specialized. Nevertheless, prominent and extensively used apps like Google Calendar, Keep, and Tasks could gain by utilizing Gemini’s AI approach. Gemini will probably be able to handle timetables, notes, and to-do lists with the help of these extensions. Although a precise release date has not been announced by Google, it may be a part of a productivity-focused feature release or part of a larger feature rollout.
This year’s wave of Google Gemini updates is compatible with all existing and upcoming Gemini extensions. The rushed timeline shows how rapidly Google is integrating Gemini into its ecosystem as well as how obviously under pressure it is to compete with or outperform its competitors. There has been much conjecture over how Amazon plans to improve Alexa through generative AI models, and it is anticipated that Apple would integrate its upcoming Apple Intelligence AI models into Siri. Google hopes that Gemini will be seen by customers as the more effective and adaptable choice, and that it will be able to chip away at the substantial market shares held by Apple’s mobile devices and Amazon’s smart home ecosystem.
