Texas Sees the Launch of the First American Energy Storage Project by Korean Energy Giants

Texas, South Korean conglomerate SK Group has taken a significant step in the U.S. energy storage sector, with its subsidiaries SK Gas and SK Eternix launching their first electricity storage system (ESS) project.

SA Grid Solutions, SK Gas’ joint venture with Apex Clean Energy, a U.S.-based company, has started power storage operations in southern Texas, the company stated Monday. Just one year after the joint venture was formed in January 2024, this development represents a significant turning point.

The recently installed facility has 340 batteries and 34 inverters that can store up to 100 megawatts of electricity. It is anticipated that by stabilizing the local energy supply, the system will reduce supply gaps during periods of variable demand, guaranteeing a more dependable power distribution for local inhabitants.

With the help of SK Eternix’s leadership in energy storage operations and SK Gas’s experience in gas trading, the two companies have big aspirations to increase their ESS presence throughout the US. By 2029, their strategic plan seeks to raise the project’s overall capacity to 900 MW. When South Korea soon launches its own energy market, this growth will offer vital operational experience in electricity trading and ESS administration, which is anticipated to be critical.

“With the ability to address the volatility of renewable energy, ESS projects will become increasingly important as the world transitions to cleaner energy,” said SK Gas Representative Director Yoon Byung-suk.

He further underlined that the project’s successful completion marks SK’s official debut in the energy trading and ESS markets in North America. “SK Gas will continue to explore opportunities in eco-friendly energy sectors, such as ESS and hydrogen energy,” Yoon added.

SK Group’s most recent endeavor demonstrates its dedication to developing clean energy solutions and bolstering its position in the quickly expanding energy storage sector as global energy markets move toward sustainability.
