Disney revealed in a recent Forbes story that the upcoming superhero movie The Marvels will cost the most of the Marvel’s Phase 5. The Marvels cost the studio an astounding $270 million USD, surpassing films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($200 million USD), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. ($250 million USD), and even the Disney+ series Secret Invasion ($212 million USD). This figure is $140 million USD higher than what filmmaker Nia DaCosta recently stated in an interview with Vanity Fair.
The MCU’s most expensive non-Avengers film, according to Marvel Studios, is this one. Even after deducting the $55 million USD in U.K. government subsidies, The Marvels’ total cost is $219.8 million USD. According to Forbes, the movie would need to make at least $439.6 million in revenue for the studio to break even on its production costs. It could be easier said than done in the theatrical landscape of today. This year, superhero flicks have had a difficult time breaking even. Quantumania, the sequel to Ant-Man and the Wasp, was one of the films that had trouble at the box office.
The Marvels, the eagerly awaited Captain Marvel sequel, will pick up with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers following the events of Avengers: Endgame. The film is expected to have appearances from Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau from WandaVision, Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel, and Samuel L. Jackson’s stalwart Nick Fury from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
