Google is finally utilizing reporting data from the crowdsourced navigation software within Google Maps, more than ten years after purchasing Waze. It turns out that this also applies to Android Auto.
The ability to view alerts from other drivers about impending conditions or incidents has always been a draw of Waze. The ability to pinpoint the location of police action, like a hidden speed trap, is maybe the most helpful feature for many. A few years back, Google Maps launched its own reporting system; however, it wasn’t until lately that the app focused more on the feature, extending it to automobile platforms like Android Auto, CarPlay, and Android Automotive.
Google also announced earlier this year that it would begin integrating Waze reporting data into Maps, giving users access to reports from a more engaged driving community. Months later, as reported at the end of November, that has now begun to roll out.
Surprisingly, Android Auto can also utilize this feature.
Similar to the mobile version, the Google Maps app for Android Auto may display Waze reports. Similar to mobile, the report type is accompanied by a notice stating that it is “from Waze drivers.” Alex Mullis saw the feature on Threads, but it’s unclear how accessible it is because not everyone can see it even on mobile devices.
This probably also holds true for Google Maps on Apple CarPlay.
Additionally, Google has made minor updates to the Maps on Android Auto reporting system, which greatly simplifies the process of reporting police activity. Even if the display in your car stops Maps from allowing you to submit reports, these Waze reports ought to still show up.
