Your US passport can now be stored in Google Wallet

You no longer need to go through your pocket or purse at the airport for one item. You can now utilize a digital copy of your US passport at Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) checkpoints by carrying it in your Google Wallet.

You must first download the Google Wallet app, log in, or establish an account before you can add your passport to Google’s virtual wallet. Follow the directions after selecting the “create an ID pass with your US passport” prompt. The app will prompt you to scan the security chip in your passport and snap a video selfie to confirm your identity. Google should be able to verify your identification in a matter of minutes.

Not all airports will accept your digital passport. At least one airport in each of the 27 states currently takes digital identification. You may find out which states and airports accept digital IDs on the TSA website.

For a while now, Google Wallet has been experimenting with the use and storage of digital passports. In recent months, a number of governments have begun to accept digital identification documents. The most recent state to accept digital identification, such as driver’s licenses and state IDs stored in Google Wallet and Apple Wallet, is New Mexico.
